A Christmas Carol revamped at Santiago's Municipal Theatre

diciembre 30, 2018

Santiago's Municipal Theatre put up a special ballet function of Dickens' beloved christmas classic and I was there for it.

Starting with Dickens' himself as the narrator throughout and starring a very expressive Scrooge, this short piece is visually stunning, certainly entertaining, and taps into one's nostalgic streak with great success.

Yes, it wasn't conventional. Yes, it re-hashed music from other ballet classics. And yes, it sort of broke a very important ballet narrative rule by having a speaking narrator.

And yet--it was enchanting.

Visually it was beautiful, dynamic, and interesting.

The dancers were fabulous, as was the choreography. The three spirits did their part to keep the magical environment going, and the dancing skeletons provided a welcomed comic relief (especially for the children!).

It was accessible and fun and a joy to watch, and something of which I'd like to see more often in ballet/classical spaces.

It would be terrific, though, if these special occasions would also include a special prize, since there weren't any discounts for these functions and the prizes were already quite inflated.

Other than that, an evening to remember. Well done, indeed.
